South Thailand's Mai Khao Beach chills out between three national parks on Phuket's north-west coast. This stretch of white sand's home to buzzing coral reefs and nesting sea turtles. The beach is mostly undeveloped, with just a few luxury resorts dotted along the coastline – the perfect spot to unwind.
Action and adventure
Activities on Mai Khao Beach's doorstep are pretty varied. Cruise past traditional stilt houses on Cheow Lan Lake, or go wild with white-water rafting at the Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary. For a low-key option that's straight out of a romance novel, swim under the waterfalls at Khao Lak-Lam Ru.
Natural wonders
Mai Khao Beach hugs close to Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, so it's not far from postcard-worthy mangroves, waterfalls and jungles. Khao Sok National Park, home to monkeys and wild elephants, is a 90-minute bus trip away. It's also a perfect place for hiking and river rafting.
