Holidays to Aghios Ioannis show off a write-home-about beach where kitesurfing and sunbathing are the main headliners.
Beach bums, assemble
Aghios Ioannis is a library-quiet village on the north-western tip of Lekfas. It’s spot-on for holidays that tick off sand and sea, as well as lip-smacking Greek dinners in teeny tavernas. The number one wowzah has got to be the two-mile-long beach, which is super-popular for both kitesurfing and sun-worshipping. There’s another pair of smaller beaches within strolling distance, too.
Camera-ready windmills
This place nods its head to historic Greece right when you least expect it. On the beach, between a rainbow of parasols, you can walk around the ruins of old windmills, which were used for flour production in the 18th century. They also make for no-filter-needed snaps come sunset. Only one of them is still in use – these days it’s a smart cocktail bar, which is ace if you fancy a fresh margherita while topping up the tan.
Leg it over to Lefkas Town
Lefkas Town – AKAK Lefkada – is the biggest town on the island, and just a 10-minute drive from Aghios Ioannis. It’s still pretty quiet compared to other Greek towns, but on Lefkas, it’s your best bet for a night out, or for a bigger choice of munch options. The marina’s huge, with room for over 600 boats – so it’s a smashing spot for people-watching with a glass of wine in hand. You’ve also got a scattering of churches and museums to visit if you want to make a day of it.Best time to go to Aghios Ioannis (Corfu)
