A French city that ticks off a famous wine heritage, a generous handful of churches, museums and squares, and is just an hour from the seaside… say hello to Bordeaux. This stylish city in the south-west of France perches on the Garonne River and gives you the best of both worlds by offering easy access to the beaches of the west coast. Food and drink play a huge part in any city break to Bordeaux, too.

Wine-down time

With some of the most famous wine in the world to hand, it would be a shame to visit Bordeaux and not learn about – and sip on – some of its locally produced vinos. If you’re going to pick one wine-themed activity, make it a visit to the city’s famous Wine Museum. Not only will you go on a great journey of discovery into wine culture, you’ll also have access to a wine-tasting space on the eighth floor. Here, you can pair 360-degree views of Bordeaux with samples of wine from around the globe.

French food to the max

When you’re not wining, make sure you’re dining – because the foodie scene here is right at the top of the league. There’s close to 30 Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as a great café culture, particularly along the river. Bordeaux’s markets are a hive of foodie fun, too. Capuchins Market, for example, is a sprawling labyrinth of stalls selling everything from dinky pastries and French cheese to wine, ham and fresh veggies.

Tonnes of culture

The sights for seeing come thick and fast here, whether you’re after Gothic architecture or wow-factor statues. Our three fave sights are Bordeaux Cathedral, the age-old Grand Theatre, and the Place de la Bourse. The latter’s a city square that’s super popular on social media. It boasts a giant reflective water feature on the ground that really is worth going to see.
