The best babymoon destinations

Congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy! We know this is an exciting – and a little bit stressful – time for you, so any part we can play to help you relax during this magical time, we’ve got you.

Speaking of which – let’s talk babymoons. A babymoon (the word comes from ‘honeymoon’, the post-wedding holiday celebration) is the last chance for expectant parents to get away without baby. It’s all about getting soon-to-be mums or dads relaxed and ready for the new arrival. Plus, it’s probably the last chance – at least for a little while – for couples to switch off and spend some quality time together before adding to their family.

Before you head off on your babymoon, it’s important to keep your doctor in the loop and clear your travel plans with them, especially if you’re at a higher medical risk during pregnancy. Make sure you check out any travel advice for your destination so you’re in the loop about things like Zika virus outbreaks (mainly spread by mosquitos). Plus, ensure that you’re up to date with relevant vaccinations, have valid travel insurance and have checked out the medical facilities in your resort.

Many pregnant women prefer not to travel in their first trimester due to increased nausea, but this is down to personal preference. However, airlines may have restrictions on how late into the pregnancy you’re allowed to fly. Most won’t allow passengers over 35 weeks’ pregnant and some require a medical certificate from your doctor or midwife after around 28 weeks. Check with your airline – any regulations are in place to provide the best safety and support to you and your baby.

Right – now that you’re in the know about this pre-baby travel trend, here are our top relaxing babymoon destinations…

Majorca

If you don’t want to spend too much time stuck on a plane or on the road, pick a destination that’s just a short flight away to maximise your relaxation time. Flights to Majorca take just two and a half hours, and the island’s only small, so you can minimise your travel time when getting to your hotel. Majorca’s capital, Palma, packs in historic sights, museums and a fancy cathedral that has a Blue Flag beach just behind it, so you can combine sightseeing with chilled beach days.

When it comes to deciding where to stay, there’s so much choice in Majorca depending on what facilities you crave. We love the Grupotel Picafort Beach hotel, which has a prime spot on Can Picafort’s sandy beachfront. There’s a large pool on the terrace with loungers and sea views, plus a spa with sauna. The restaurant is buffet style, with a mix of themed nights and cooking stations, or you can wander into the nearby village for extra restaurant options, plus further shops and bars.

It’s also in the same time zone as the UK for half the year, so you can say goodbye to jetlag and sleepless nights – until your baby arrives, that is.

Head toAgadirto make the most of its sweeping golden-sand coastline and souvenir-filled souks. Hotel-wise, we’re fans of theRiu Palace Tikida Agadir, which has its own private beach area, plus two à la carte restaurants and a huge swimming pool surrounded by plush daybeds. There’s also a spa and wellness centre where you can book spa treatments – just the thing to help parents-to-be relax before the bundle of joy arrives.

You can have your fill of as much pizza, pasta, arancini and gelato as your pregnancy – or hungry co-parent – cravings require during your babymoon.

Hotel-wise, the Hotel Caesar Palace is in a prime spot with a rooftop solarium giving epic views of Mount Etna. It also boasts its own private beach – with free shuttle bus back to the hotel – plus a huge pool. Enjoy the weekly Sicilian-themed night with local food and live folk music.

Turkey

With coastlines across the Black Sea, the Aegean and the Mediterranean, you’re certainly not short of beautiful beaches in Turkey. Even better, many of them are Blue Flag awarded, so we’re talking seriously celebration-worthy getaways. The Dalaman region on the south-west coast – known as the Turquoise Coast, no less – offers stunning views alongside that crystal-clear water.

Aptly named, The Beachfront hotel is right on the water, plus it’s adults only, with a chic, minimalist vibe for a real Zen getaway. The beachfront restaurant offers local and international cuisines with live music in the summer months.
