Thailand honeymoons can go one of two ways – total chill in a five-star hotel with an itinerary of spa treatments or an active adventure hopping between islands and the country’s staple cities. Either way, the scenery is stunning, the food will make your local takeaway never taste the same again, and there are plenty of nightlife picks if you’re not ready for your celebrations to end.

Thailand works its way onto everyone’s travel bucket list at some point, so why not tick it off with your now official travel partner for life? They might not know that’s what they signed up for but after this epic honeymoon, we’re sure they won’t be mad about it… The country is literally nicknamed ‘the land of smiles’, and this is meant to be the happiest time of your life – perfect.

Fill your albums full of photos of grand temples, wild monkeys and beautiful beaches you wouldn’t believe. Phuket is Thailand’s prime island and balances party vibes with the white sands at Bang Tao and Tri Trang Beach. For something a bit quieter, Khao Lak is on the southwest coast, with big beaches, a night market and plenty of watersports to keep you busy. This region is also home to the famous Dragon Cave Temple. Or, Bangkok is always a go-to for a bit of culture – check out its Wat Paknam temple to see the Big Buddha. Then, Koh Samui’s green jungles, waterfalls and world-class food are definitely worth a stop on your honeymoon tour, if only for the sunsets.

The national parks here are really something else. Erawan National Park is filled with waterfalls, lakes and landscapes that won’t let you put your camera away. It’s also where you’ll find free-roaming elephants and we’ve got loads of approved experiences you can treat yourselves to, to spot these incredible creatures. Or, if underwater wildlife is more your thing, pick snorkelling in the Similan Islands. Here, you can be lucky enough to swim alongside turtles and loads of brightly coloured fish and coral. If you’re flexible with dates, Whale Shark season is from January to March, which might help to sway you… You can’t stay on these islands, which makes them even more special, but you can do a daytrip from Phuket or Khao Lak.

If you pick to move about or stay in one place, make sure you have time to enjoy your hotel here. From great-value, lower-starred places to the big five-star resorts, there are some real gems. Think private huts hidden away among palm trees, sweeping infinity pools or luxury high-rise builds with an epic rooftop. You definitely get more for your money here and that goes for the food and spa treatments too, so you can lock in a few couples’ massages and load up on pad thai and tom yum soup without blowing the budget.

Planning your honeymoon to Thailand

It’s just about the two of you. So, what honeymoon vibe sums you up as a couple?

  • Luxury island escape – If you dream of white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, Thailand’s islands like Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Lipe are known for the stuff.
  • Culture and history – For couples fascinated by history, Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya are all about rich cultural experiences, with ancient temples, local markets and traditional Thai cooking classes.
  • Adventure and nature – If you love exploring the outdoors, destinations like Krabi and Khao Sok National Park have rock climbing, jungle trekking, and kayaking opportunities through limestone caves.
  • City chic and party – If you enjoy buzzy city life, Bangkok offers a mix of luxury hotels, rooftop bars, street food experiences and shopping, perfect for a honeymoon with a bit more action.

Splash out or maybe you’re still saving for the big day or even a house? Set your budget now so you know what you have to play with.

  • The hotel – Thailand can cater to all honeymoon budgets, and the hotel is what sets the tone. Luxury private villas start from around £300+ per night, mid-range hotels around £80-£200, and you can book budget stays from £20-£50 per night. Depending how long you want to be away for too, you can judge how much you might be able to afford. If you go boujie, maybe go All Inclusive – you’ll want to make the most of the facilities if you’re paying more for them anyway. Or, if you pick a budget place, then you can spend more on things to do.
  • Food, activities and transport – Eating street food and using public transport are easy ways to make your Thailand honeymoon nice and budget-friendly. Or, if you want to treat yourself or have some savings put aside, private boat tours, fine dining and luxury spa treatments could be well worth splashing out for.

Browsing hotels is one of the fun bits – swim-up room, swim-up bar or both?

  • Luxury – Think private pool villas in beachfront resorts. Destinations like Koh Samui, Phuket and Krabi offer private infinity pools, beachfront bungalows and All Inclusive luxury resorts.
  • Mid-range – AKA boutique hotels with a unique Thai charm. Chiang Mai and Bangkok have stylish boutique hotels offering great value with local design, rooftop pools and spa services.
  • Budget – Try affordable guesthouses, hostels and bungalows. On islands like Koh Tao and Koh Lanta, beachfront bungalows and cosy guesthouses usually have stunning views at budget-friendly rates.

Thailand honeymoons are great for moving around if you want to see more than one place, so see what your best transport options are first.

  • Best airports – Bangkok (BKK/DMK), Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX) and Koh Samui (USM) are the main hubs for international and domestic flights.
  • Internal travel – While domestic flights save time, ferries and local buses and trains provide scenic journeys between destinations and can be much cheaper.
  • Avoid tourist traps and scams – Use official taxi apps like Grab and agree on tuk tuk fares in advance.

Always make sure you check what documents are required to enter the country you’re visiting and keep back-ups… just in case.

  • Valid passport – Thailand requires a minimum of six months’ validity on your passport upon entry. Check yours is all good with our passport checker.
  • Visa – UK, EU and US citizens get a 30-day visa-free stay, but longer stays may require a tourist visa.
  • Travel insurance – Thailand has great healthcare, but insurance ensures coverage for unexpected issues, including adventure activities.
  • Document copies – Get them saved to your iCloud storage or email them to yourself for easy access, as well as taking printed copies.

It’s always nice to learn some local phrases so you’re not just relying on people to speak English.

  • Key phrases – Khop khun ka/khrap (thank you), Sawasdee ka/khrap (hello), Tao rai? (how much?). In Thai, ‘khrap’ is a polite particle used at the end of some sentences to show respect – ‘khrap’ is used by men, ‘ka’ by women.
  • Cultural customs – When visiting temples, dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees), remove your shoes before entering homes or temples and avoid touching people’s heads, as it’s considered disrespectful.
  • Tipping etiquette – While tipping isn’t required in Thailand, rounding up bills or leaving 10% at restaurants and small tips for hotel staff and drivers is a kind gesture.

Our Holiday Extras page is the place to be to get the practical stuff prepped for your trip.

  • eSIMs – Decide if you need an eSIM, local SIM or an international phone plan. Local SIM cards like AIS and TrueMove are affordable and offer great data coverage but our eSIM offer means you don’t need a new phone number or SIM card.
  • Travel money – Let your bank know about international travel to avoid any blocks to your card. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carrying some Thai baht (THB) is useful for street vendors and taxis. Many markets and tuk tuks only accept cash, so it’s deffo good keep some on you.

Core memories are made here, so make sure you don’t miss the main bucket-list stuff.

  • Decide the number of destinations – If you’re going away for 10 days, you could fit in visiting 2-3 different destinations. And, to avoid too much travel time, we recommend you stick to a combination like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui or Phuket, Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands.
  • Must-see sights – Highlights include sailing in Phang Nga Bay, visiting the Grand Palace in Bangkok and doing an authentic Thai cooking class. You can always book ahead with First Choice Experiences.
  • ‘Buffer days’ – Block out a day after you arrive to adjust to jet lag. There’s no point planning in loads to do if you can’t enjoy it because you’re tired. Taking it easy on the first day to adjust to the time change can pay off later on.

Avoid the arguments about who gets more space and make sure you’ve both at least covered the essentials.

  • Seasonal outfits – Go for lightweight and breathable – Thailand is either at least hot or humid (or both) all year round – and don’t forget swimwear for the beach and light cover-ups for temple visits.
  • Travel essentials – We’re talking your sunscreens, your mosquito repellents and your comfy sandals. Bug spray is essential in jungle areas and try to go for a reef-safe sunscreen for island visits.
  • Versatile items – Flowy dresses, linen shirts and comfy sandals work well for both beach and city adventures.
  • Travel adaptors – Thailand uses Type A, B and C plugs but a universal travel adapter is always a good investment, so you can use it wherever you go and charge multiple devices.

Sometimes the best date-night ideas need booking ahead, so plan for a lil surprise when you get there.

  • Restaurants – Especially fine dining spots and rooftop bars. For top picks like Vertigo Rooftop in Bangkok or The Grotto in Krabi, reservations are a must.
  • Experiences – Phi Phi Island boat tours, Thai cooking classes and jungle treks should all be pre-booked to secure spots.
  • Surprises – Spa days or private beach dinners are top-tier extra touches. Many resorts offer couples’ spa packages and private beachfront dining, but it’s always best to book ahead for the best experience.

Thailand honeymoon FAQs

November to February is dry season and so has ideal weather for beaches and outdoor activities. You probably want to avoid May to October, which is the rainy season in coastal areas like Koh Samui, although northern regions like Chiang Mai remain lush and crowd-free then.

7 to 10 days is ideal if you want to combine 2–3 locations, like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. But if you want to do more island-hopping and visit the jungle areas in Khao Sok National Park, we’d say at least two weeks.

Yes, Thailand is one of Asia’s most welcoming and inclusive destinations, and same-sex marriage was legalised in 2024. Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai are known for their buzzing LGBTQ+ scenes.

UK and US citizens don’t need a visa for stays of less than 30 days. And in terms of vaccinations, you should consult your GP as to whether you need Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus.
